FEADSHIP REVEALS 115-METRE CONCEPT DESIGN HIVE
Feadship has unveiled HIVE, its latest and largest concept design to date, during the Monaco Yacht Show. Measuring 115 metres, HIVE presents a fresh vision for life at sea, placing people and their experiences at the centre of the yacht’s design.
Developed by Studio De Voogt, led by Senior Designer Jan Schaffers, in collaboration with Feadship’s naval architects and engineering specialists, HIVE combines innovative spatial planning with technologies designed to be technically achievable.
Rather than beginning with a conventional yacht layout, the design process focused on how owners and guests might live, connect and spend their time on board. A fictional family of four provided the human context, reflecting Feadship’s pure custom philosophy of designing around an owner’s individual lifestyle.
A shared heart central to HIVE is an expansive open space spanning four decks, conceived as the yacht’s social heart. On the main deck, the area can transform from a spacious saloon into a stage or auditorium, with terraces opening to both port and starboard.
Curved staircases connect balconies and more intimate spaces above, while supporting facilities allow the area to accommodate everything from relaxed family gatherings to lectures, performances and large-scale events.
The concept was also influenced by Feadship’s collaboration with Boat International’s Young Designer of the Year competition, where emerging designers worked alongside Studio De Voogt and explored changing expectations of life on board.
Beyond its central gathering space, HIVE offers a variety of distinctive environments. Highlights include a two-storey beach lounge, water-level dining for more than 24 guests, a glass-enclosed foredeck library opening onto a private garden and an underwater lounge with panoramic views beneath the surface.
The owner’s deck features a 20-metre swimming pool equipped with Feadship’s patented ContraWave™ technology, extending indoors into a suspended glass-bottomed infinity pool. Above, an observation lounge with a retractable glass roof provides uninterrupted views of the night sky.
A new design direction HIVE also introduces a new direction for Studio De Voogt’s exterior design language. Its long, low profile builds on ideas previously explored through Feadship concepts Pure and C, challenging traditional bridge and superstructure arrangements.
A virtual command centre allows the forward sections of the superstructure to be dedicated to owner accommodation and observation spaces. Cameras and sensors provide navigational information, while retractable glass wing stations offer direct exterior visibility during close-quarters manoeuvring.
Large expanses of glass and integrated terraces visually connect the yacht’s different levels, creating a cohesive profile rather than a traditional stacked-deck appearance.
Future-Ready Engineering technical feasibility remains fundamental to the HIVE concept. Its proposed DC electrical architecture combines three 900 kW variable-speed permanent-magnet generators operating on HVO with fuel cells and a 5 MWh battery bank.
Zero-emission operation could be supported by solid oxide or PEM fuel cells combined with a methanol reformer, while Voith Schneider Propellers provide precise omnidirectional thrust, enhanced manoeuvrability and low-noise operation.
“HIVE is designed around the idea that experiences can change people,” says Jan Schaffers. “We wanted to explore what becomes possible when you start not with what a yacht has always been, but with how people might want to live on board in the near future.”
HIVE is being presented privately during the Monaco Yacht Show at the House of Feadship, where invited guests can explore the concept through a scale model and meet the Studio De Voogt designers behind its development.
