EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE: ROLLS-ROYCE PRESENTS NEW MTU MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS AND SERVICES AT SMM 2026

Rolls-Royce Power Systems will unveil a range of advanced technologies at SMM 2026 aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of commercial shipping. The company will showcase its latest propulsion solutions, sustainable fuel technologies, intelligent automation systems and comprehensive service offerings, all designed to help operators prepare their fleets for the future.

Among the highlights are the new standardized variable-speed mtu Series 2000 generator sets for commercial vessels. Delivering industry-leading power density, these systems can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 15% compared with conventional constant-speed generator sets. By automatically adjusting engine speed to match varying load demands, they offer greater efficiency while enhancing reliability and operational flexibility. They are particularly well suited to electric and hybrid vessels, where energy optimization is essential. The variable-speed technology also lowers onboard noise and vibration, significantly improving passenger and crew comfort. The range includes compact, high-performance 8-, 10-, 12- and 16-cylinder variants for applications including passenger ferries, search and rescue vessels, offshore support vessels, yachts and patrol boats.

Complementing the propulsion portfolio is a new Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment system, fully compliant with the latest IMO Tier III emissions standards. The solution helps vessel operators meet stringent environmental regulations while supporting the industry’s transition to more sustainable shipping.

Rolls-Royce is also strengthening its automation offering with mtu NautIQ, integrated bridge solutions and advanced data analytics. These technologies enable operators to manage fleets more safely, efficiently and sustainably, whether for newbuilds or vessel modernization projects.
