IWC Launches own Racing Team and Special-edition Ingenieur at Good wood
IWC has been involved in motorsport for many years. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer is, for example, a partner of Mercedes-AMG, and also supports historic racing events like the Good wood Members’ Meeting. “With the foundation of the IWC Racing Team, we are now extending the storytelling universe that we build around our high-quality mechanical watches with an additional, high attractive dimension. With this step, we once again underscore our role as a pioneer in the luxury watch industry”, explains Christoph Grainger-Herr, the CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.
The IWC Racing Team will compete in selected classic car races with its Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”. The sports car with doors reminiscent of the wings of a seagull was manufactured by Daimler-Benz between 1954 and 1957 as a road-ready version of the 300 SL race car. It dates back to the same time as when IWC’s watchmakers built the first Ingenieur. The iconic sports car will be driven alternately by David Coulthard, Lewis Hamilton, ValtteriBottas, Jochen Mass, Maro Engel, and Carmen Jordá. The IWC Racing Team made its first appearance at Good wood in the Salvadori Cup, which was run for sports cars if a type that raced between 1955 and 1960. David Coulthard finished the race in 9.place.
MOTORSPORT ACTION IN ABUNDANCE
Throughout the weekend, guests were treated to the finest in classic motor sport. One of the highlights on the 3.8-kilometer Goodwood Motor Circuit was the Caracciola Sport wagenrennen for sports cars of a type that raced between 1925 and 1935, which was presented by IWC.
The winner received an Ingenieur Chronograph Edition “Rudolf Caracciola” (Ref. IW380702). Guests were also treated to off-road rides aboard vintage Land Rovers and were brought close to the action on exclusive tours of the paddocks.
New Special Edition in the Ingenieur Family
IWC also launched the Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “76th Members’ Meeting at Good wood”. This sporty and elegant chronograph in a classic columm-wheel design is powered by the IWC-manufacture 69380 caliber, featuring a pawl-winding system and a 46-hour power reserve. Its case with a diameter of 44 millimeters is made of titanium and has crown protection. The slver-plated dial, the black subdials, the black hands coated with luminescence, and the blue chronograph hands create a dial that is rich in contrasts. This sporty yet elegant timepiece is worn on a black calfskin leather strap and is limited to 176 numbered pieces. A soft-iron inner cage protects the movement from magnetic fields. The lower part of the cage is inspired by a bake disk and imprinted with’76’, commemorating this year’s edition of the Good wood Members’ Meeting.
