RINA is celebrating 10 years of Green Yachting
On the occasion of the Monaco Yacht Show 2017, RINA will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Green certification dedicated to the nautical world. In 2007, the notation “Green Plus” was created in response to industry demands to provide a tool that he felt the ship owners in protecting the environment and, at the same time, was able to offer the flexibility needed to cover the variety of uses and the technological evolution of superyachts.
FiorenzoSpadoni, Italy Yachting Center Manager for RINA Services commented – “The flexibility of the additional notation” Green Plus “allows us to update the schema with a gradually more innovative technology that are adopted. It is important that this voluntary certification promotes the adoption of advanced technologies that would further reduce the environmental impact of this sector. ”
Originally introduced as “Green Star” to support the needs of Expedition cruises, the schema then evolved becoming “Green Plus”, ie able to assess the overall environmental impact of a yacht at the same time and be ready to adapt to changes in the sector.
“The appreciation of the world of sailing for the” RINA Green Plus “is demonstrated by the fact that 80% of our customers with superior boats 40 m requires this voluntary certification. For this reason, we will continue to innovate our services to meet, if not anticipate, the most innovative trends of the nautical “- said Spadoni.
Unlike MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) and other legislation which sometimes have more difficulty in adapting to the new demands of the marine industry and might not be able to cover all the factors that impact on ‘ environmental impact of a yacht, the notation “Green Plus” is the certification that demonstrates the commitment by the owners in making them more sustainable vessels. It also provides two additional goals, “Green Yacht Plus Gold” and “Platinum Green Plus Yacht”, showing the growing commitment of shipowners in environmental protection, as well as the prestige of the yachts who receive it.
A further step towards a nautical increasingly green is the new class notation “RINA Environmental Footprint”, the natural evolution of Green Plus. It is based on the evaluation of many aspects that can affect the potential pollution from a boat in all stages of his life, beginning construction to disposal. Through the said method ‘Life Cycle Assessment’, already widely in use in the automotive industry, this notation is designed to guide the construction and the commercialization of products that are more eco-friendly.
Spadoni has concluded – “We are excited to celebrate the Monaco Yacht Show, the successful certification” Green Plus “. How many of our services, this notation was developed in response to demand from our customers, we will continue to listen carefully to ensure that RINA remains the trusted partner of the yachting industry. “
