A HISTORIC HOMECOMING ON THE 117TH ANNIVERSARY OF ABEKING & RASMUSSEN
Do ships have personalities? At first glance, the question may seem esoteric, particularly in the world of yachts. But anyone who has ever stepped aboard a ship built by Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) would likely respond with a nod. For many owners, their yachts are much more than mere luxury items or investments they are faithful companions, elegant and stylish, with a unique ability to enchant year after year. This bond goes far beyond monetary value.
This special connection also explains why A&R yachts rarely appear for sale in the media. They are seldom sold publicly, often staying within families or quietly passing into the hands of trusted new owners. Today, many of these proud ships are still sailing the world’s oceans, gleaming as brightly as ever, even after decades of service.
One of the finest examples of this timeless allure is the sailing yacht “Jagare,” which has been in the same family for 43 years and has circumnavigated the globe eight times including recent voyages to the Arctic and Antarctic. This is a testament to the superior craftsmanship and build quality of the shipyard. Originally purchased by the father of the current owner, the yacht was passed down to his eldest daughter in an emotional handover, reflecting the strong family bond with the vessel. The current owner vividly recalls accompanying her father to the shipyard in Lemwerder as a 12- year-old girl to witness the construction of “Jagare.” Now, 43 years later, the yacht returns to its birthplace after a successful summer season in Northern Europe. This homecoming is not merely a technical maintenance stop, but a meaningful moment that unites history, passion, and craftsmanship.
The 37-meter “Jagare” was built in 1981 by the renowned German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen and bears hull number 6378. Since its founding in 1907 by boatbuilder Henry Rasmussen who comes from Svendborg in Denmark and the Mechanical engineer Georg Abeking, the shipyard has produced countless outstanding sailing yachts along the banks of the Weser River in Lower Saxony. The return of the “Jagare” is a fitting tribute to this long tradition. With an overall length of 36.5 meters, a beam of 8.08 meters, a draft of 3.51 meters, and a gross tonnage of 221 GT, the yacht represents masterful engineering and exceptional craftsmanship.
Technical details and luxurious amenities The yacht’s elegant interior was designed by renowned designer Peter Sijm and the captain, also enjoy comfortable quarters. With an aluminum hull and superstructure, the yacht boasts a robust yet lightweight build. Powered by a strong engine, “Jagare” reaches a top speed of 12 knots. Her fuel capacity of 26,117 liters makes her ideal for long voyages at sea.
Abeking & Rasmussen Tradition Meets Innovation for over a century, Abeking & Rasmussen has built an exceptional reputation by blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge innovation. From its modest beginnings with small sailboats and wooden minehunters, the shipyard has evolved into a global leader in yacht and shipbuilding. Today’s highlights include luxury motor yachts like the 118-meter “LIVA” as well as state-of-the-art multipurpose vessels and minehunters commissioned by governments around the world.
With “Jagare’s” return to Lemwerder, A&R not only celebrates the craftsmanship and heritage of the past decades but also showcases the timeless elegance and performance of its yachts. “Jagare” is a proud example of the exceptional quality that has distinguished Abeking & Rasmussen for more than 117 years.
