ZURN YACHT DESIGN
ZURN YACHT DESIGN WITH 3 MODELS AT FLIBS 2015
MJM 50 –
Zurn Yacht Design, MJM Yachts’ Bob Johnstone (of J Boats fame), and Boston Boatworks have teamed up to create a very unique line of powerboats. Beginning with the 2003 MJM 34z, they set out to establish new standards in design, construction and performance. All MJM yachts are designed from the ground up to be efficient and practical; featuring easily driven, light-weight hulls, modern propulsion, and suitable accommodations. Now, 12 years later, MJM continues to be the industry leader in technology and efficiency. MJMs are approaching 200 builds. The partnership of Zurn Yacht Design, MJM, and Boston Boatworks continues to advance the initial design goals of efficiency, simplicity, strength, performance and beauty.

Our direct drive inboard models are offered in either gas or diesel power and our hull is equipped with a unique propeller and shaft pocket which provides a very modest 22-inch draft. Our outboard models offer exceptional performance with best-in-class fuel economy. Either power package provides a balanced feel and an exceptionally smooth ride, a trademark characteristic of a Vanquish.
Vanquish Boats has taken Doug Zurn’s exclusive bow forward design to the next level, creating even more room for movement in the cockpit area and fostering an uncluttered feeling. Billy Joel’s Commuter – “VENDETTA” – 57′
Zurn Yacht Design project N°0164 will be on display in a very hi-profile position adjacent to the superyachts at the water pavilion (SYBAss). In the wake of his highly successful 38’ Runabout with 50+ hulls built to date, Grammy-award winning musician Billy Joel again consulted with Zurn on creating an upscale 57’ Commuter Style Yacht.
This big sister to “The Runabout” keeps with Zurn’s blend of classic styling in a 45 knot package, while offering a much larger platform from which to enjoy Long Island Sound and quick jaunts to other coastal destinations. The end result boasts ample cockpit space and interior appointments. All is styled in the classic manner of the commuter yachts of the 1920s.
Weighing only 40,000 pounds (18,529 kg), VENDETTA glides atop the open ocean with speeds in excess of forty knots, while twin 1300 horsepower MAN diesels coupled to POWER-VENT ® Marine Drive System quietly drone under a well-insulated engine room. A relatively narrow, modified-V hull, with plumb bow, slight rocker forward and straight sections aft, makes for an admirable performer, whether ambling in the calm of a secluded cove or piercing wind-whipped swells on an open sea.
Vendetta was launched in the summer of 2005, but it’s still almost unknown out of US . The hull was built using advanced resin infusion technique, incorporating vinylester resin infused into a Dupont Kevlar hybrid cloth with Core Cell foam core. The hull, deck and small parts were assembled and finished at both Coecles Harbor Marine and Derecktors Mamaroneck Yard.
Down below VENDETTA is decidedly open, with only one personal door providing privacy to the head compartment. There is a raised galley area aft with small dining table. Forward are two settee/bunks with day bag storage just above and outboard. Overhead hatches, portlights and dorade vents offer excellent natural illumination and ventilation while air-conditioning and 24vdc lighting provide additional creature comforts.
